Mapping Out Region’s History
A CAMPAIGN to put South Tyneside’s coal mining heritage on the map is gathering pace.
Launched at the Durham Miners’ Gala, the Pin the Pits campaign hopes to win recognition for the UK’s former coal mining communities by having a half pit wheel placed on Ordnance Survey Maps to mark the sites of former mines.
Backing the call is Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn.
He said: “This is an excellent campaign which deserves support to memorialise the industrial heritage of working class people.
“It is important that their contribution should never be forgotten.”
If successful the pit symbol would appear under the classification of historical features next to Roman forts, battle sites and other antiquities.
