SDK Starts Shipments of 2.5-Inch 250 GB HD Media

September 17, 2008

Tokyo, Sept 17, 2008 – (JCN Newswire) – Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has started commercial shipments of 2.5-inch hard disk (HD) media with storage capacity of 250 gigabytes per disk based on the perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology*. To the best of our knowledge, our new 2.5-inch HD media have the world’s highest storage capacity for this size available on the market today. The new product is another fourth-generation** PMR media offered by SDK following the 1.89-inch media launched in August. (Please refer to the latest news release dated September 11, 2008).

In addition to the 1.89- and 2.5-inch fourth-generation PMR media, SDK is making preparations for commercial production of 3.5- inch fourth-generation PMR media in an effort to expand its lineup of large-capacity media. As the new 2.5-inch 250 gigabyte HD media will contribute to the production of smaller hard disk drives (HDDs) with larger storage capacity, they will be used in small notebook PCs that deal with moving pictures.

SDK has been making aggressive investments in the HD media business, developing world-leading technologies. As the world’s largest independent HD media supplier, SDK will continue meeting customer requirements both in terms of quality and quantity.

* PMR technology:

Compared with the conventional technology that stores magnetic data on a horizontal plane of the HD media, the PMR technology enables vertical magnetic recording, resulting in a dramatic increase in recording density.

**The fourth-generation PMR media:

SDK’s HD media based on the PMR technology are classified as shown in the table below according to respective storage capacities.

________________(Unit: gigabytes per disk) —————————————– Generation__1.89-inch__2.5-inch__3.5-inch —————————————– 1____________40________ 80______ 160 —————————————– 2____________60________120______ 250 —————————————– 3____________80________160______ 334 —————————————– 4__________ 120________250______(500) —————————————– As for the product in parentheses, preparations are under way to start its commercial production.
