Tokyo, Sept. 19 (Jiji Press)–Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corp. said Friday that they have agreed to extend Iceland technical support to promote the country’s clean energy policy.

As a first step, the two Japanese companies will cooperate in infrastructure development for verification testing of the i MiEV electric vehicle that Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Iceland will carry out in fiscal 2009 starting next April.

In addition, the two companies will look to collaborate in the manufacture and supply of dimethyl ether to replace light oil as fuel for fishing vessels. Dimethyl ether is made from a mixture of gases created during geothermal power generation and carbon dioxide emitted from aluminum refineries.

Iceland is trying to end its dependence on fossil fuels. About 70 pct of its primary energy consumption is already covered by such renewable sources as geothermal power and hydropower.END
