Va. Aviation Earns Business Award

September 21, 2008

The Virginia Department of Aviation has become the first state- operated flight department to receive business aviation’s best- practices certification. The International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations’ certification serves as a benchmark of professionalism for flight operations departments.

“This is a program that takes risk management, safety management and standardization to the highest industry standard for our flight operations,” Aviation Department Director Randall Burdette said.

The state Aviation Department is the 120th flight department to be certified worldwide to the voluntary standard developed by the International Business Aviation Council.

Safety is the effort’s goal, but the program also reviews flight departments’ business practices.

The Aviation Department provides executive flight service to Virginia state agencies. With six full-time pilots, the department operates two Beechcraft King Air 350 turboprop airplanes and a single-engine Cessna 206 airplane.
