National Grid to Begin Watford Renew Gas Mains Renewal Project

National Grid, a UK-based energy grid operator, has announced that starting September 22, 2008, the company will begin a five-week project to renew gas mains in Hempstead Road and Grove Mill Lane, near the Hunton Bridge Interchange, in Watford, UK.

The work is part of a national mains renewal program developed by National Grid in conjunction with the UK Health & Safety Executive and the energy market regulator, Ofgem.

Grove Mill Lane will be closed to through traffic, with access for Grove Mill Lane residents only. Motorists who travel to and from Watford via Grove Mill Lane will be diverted via Langleybury Lane, A41 Watford Road and Hempstead Road, said National Grid.

The work is being carried out by Morrison Utility Services on behalf of National Grid. The company said that 400m of 12-inch, medium pressure gas main will be replaced with new plastic pipes which have a life-span of 80 years and will require little or no maintenance.

Brian Canfield, construction operations engineer of National Grid, said: "This essential work is part of National Grid's ongoing investment in Watford's gas network that will enable local people to continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for decades to come. Safety is our top priority and temporary traffic management measures have been agreed with the local highways authority to protect the public, road-users and our workers."
