RWE Npower Readies CO2 Capture Test Facilities at Didcot Power Station

RWE npower has announced that it is completing new facilities at the Didcot power station in Oxfordshire in the UK, designed to test CO2 capture. The new test facility will be completed in September 2008.
The test facility will enable RWE npower to evaluate the capture of CO2 from gases released after the burning of coal, and from oxyfuel firing.
The company said that it would also press ahead with plans to start work in 2009 at Aberthaw in South Wales on the CO2 pilot plant capturing flue gas direct from a commercially operating power station.
Andrew Duff, CEO of RWE npower, said: "The consultation proposals focus on the carbon capture-readiness of power stations but the government should also be providing the strategic and regulatory framework to underpin a CO2 transportation and storage network. It should also be prioritizing an efficient regulatory system for storage sites."
