Energy Issue in Focus

ENERGY and the challenges of providing it will be the theme of the second annual Thomas Hepburn lecture on Friday.

National Union of Mineworkers' president Ian Lavery will deliver the lecture in memory of 19th Century Durham miner and trade unionist Thomas Hepburn, whose tireless efforts changed the working lives of many in the North East.

His Northern Union of Pitmen helped reduce the working day from around 18 hours to 12.

Friday's lecture will take place at Gateshead Old Town Hall at 6pm.

Gateshead Council hopes to build on the success of last year's inaugural event, which saw Prof Paul Younger talk about how existing coal reserves could be extracted using new, cleaner technology across the North East. Prof Younger will provide an update on the progress made on this.
