Fort Lauderdale Flights to Resume at Tri-State

September 25, 2008

Allegiant Air, the low-cost carrier that dropped nonstop service between Huntington’s Tri-State Airport and Fort Lauderdale at the end of August, announced Wednesday that the service would resume on Nov. 20.

In a release announcing resumption of the Fort Lauderdale flights, Allegiant President Maurice G. Gallagher Jr. cited “persistent and persuasive community efforts, stronger than anticipated summer bookings and significant decreases in fuel costs” as the reasons for restoring the service.

Allegiant initiated service from Huntington to Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood International Airport in November 2007.

“Within a matter of days of the last Fort Lauderdale flight, more than 500 Allegiant customers signed a petition at the airport indicating they were willing to pay a somewhat higher airfare to help offset the airline’s increased operating costs,” said Tri- State Airport director Larry Salyers. “Most passengers cited the convenience factor and having direct ties to the south Florida area as the main reasons for wanting to see the service remain at Tri- State.”

“When the facts change, we are not afraid to change our minds,” said Robert Ashcroft, vice president of planning for Allegiant. “Demand for Fort Lauderdale from Huntington this summer frankly surprised us, and we are delighted to follow the community’s lead.”

“This is great news for the tri-state community,” said Salyers. “We appreciate Allegiant’s willingness to listen to our customers’ requests and giving us a second opportunity to show that our community really does want this flight.”

Allegiant also operates flights between Huntington Tri-State and airports serving the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas.

Starting Nov. 20, nonstop flights from Huntington to Fort Lauderdale will depart Tri-State on Thursdays and Sundays at 5:10 p.m. and arrive at Fort Lauderdale at 7:30 p.m.

Flights leaving Fort Lauderdale will depart at 2:05 p.m. and arrive at Tri-State at 4:30 p.m.

A limited $79 one-way introductory fare will be available on some flights booked by Oct. 15. After that, one-way fares on the route will start at $89.

Reservations may be made through the carrier’s Website, at www.allegiantair.com, or by calling Allegiant’s reservations center at (702) 505-8888.
