Free Swimming for Pensioners and Under-16s
Free swimming will be enjoyed by pensioners and children from April next year thanks to new government grants, it has been revealed.
About half a million pounds will be earmarked for North Lincolnshire pensioners and the under-16s to enjoy free swimming between 2009 and 2011.
The free swimming plan is part of a Government initiative intended to tie in with the London Olympics in 2012 and ‘secure a lasting sporting legacy’.
Nationally, the government has pledged pounds140 million to councils for free swimming, which it hopes will pave the way for a future Rebecca Adlington or Dave Roberts to get into the sport.
North Lincolnshire Council’s cabinet member for Leisure, Arts and Culture councillor Christine O’Sullivan confirmed the council has signed up to the scheme in the last few days.
As the council has signed up for the free swimming project, it is also entitled to part of pounds10 million on offer for pool modernisation across the country and is expected to apply in October.
