A CENTRE celebrating the North East’s mining history has officially opened.
Thirteen years after the closure of Durham Coalfield’s last working mine, Wearmouth Colliery, the North East England Mining Archive and Research Centre (Neemarc) was launched on the same site.
The day-long event on Saturday featured talks and displays at Sunderland Football Club’s Stadium of Light, which was built on the former colliery site.
Centre chairman, Dr Stuart Howard, said: “For more than 400 years the region led the world in the scale of its coal mining industry. The culture, landscape and people were all shaped by this industry.”
The group’s website is www.neemarc.com.
