Rio Tinto Alcan Lochaber Plant Marks Significant Milestone in Workplace Safety With Its Second Consecutive Accident-Free Year
MONTREAL, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Rio Tinto Alcan's Lochaber plant employees reached a major safety landmark last week, completing the facility's second consecutive year without accidents in the workplace.
"From the operations and maintenance teams through to senior management, we have all worked hard to achieve an accident-free record at Lochaber," said Mick Routledge, Works Manager. "This track record also applies to contractors and suppliers working within the Lochaber works and is a significant milestone for health and safety."
"Staff have been extremely vigilant and supportive of the new safety model, which focuses on preventative measures and minimising the risk of accidents," Routledge added. Following the introduction of the Stop and Think safety model, Lochaber's 167 employees have undertaken over 12,000 pre-job risk assessments.
"Safety is important to all of us. What has made this a successful scheme for the team here is the way we have worked together across all areas of the plant to take on the new safety model," said Peter McIntyre, a lab analyst who has worked at the Lochaber and Kinlochleven plants for the last 32 years. "It has been adopted at all levels of the local organisation and that makes a difference. We're all used to undertaking the pre-job risk assessments and it has become very much a part of the processes we follow within our working day."
Following an audit on safety practices in 2006, existing behavioural-based safety teams were trained, working with each group within the plant to coach them on improving safety. This has worked in tandem with the Stop and Think safety model, which includes risk assessment for all tasks and job freeze audits carried out by all site staff to support and encourage compliance.
