Not so Cheap Here

David Close says the South Island has the cheapest power in New Zealand (Oct 1). It is difficult to make a clear comparison between suppliers, but it appears from their websites that Genesis Energy, in Auckland and Wellington, is considerably cheaper than Meridian in Christchurch.

What is clear is that the North Island has an abundance of cheap energy from natural gas, where they pay from 5 cents per kilowatt hour to heat their homes and water, whereas in the South Island LPG costs from 18 cents per kilowatt hour.

This is ironic, when we live in the colder island and require more energy to heat our homes and water.
