Transport Plan for New Mine Causes Alarm

October 3, 2008

CONCERNS have been raised over travel plans for removing coal from a proposed new mining site in West Lothian.

Energy company The Banks Group submitted plans last December to extract coal and fireclay from a site near Breich.

The company wants to mine 1.5 million tons of coal over a seven- year period from the 380-acre Rusha site, creating 57 jobs.

But there are concerns about the route the lorries carrying the coal to Longannet Power Station will take. Banks has proposed the lorries should take the A704 road west from the site on to the A706, which heads through Longridge.

Anne Clark, chairperson of Longridge Community Council, said: “People are concerned about traffic levels, especially at peak times.”
