Colo. Right-to-Work Measure Close in Poll

Nearly half of voters oppose a Colorado ballot initiative that would make it harder to organize labor unions, a poll indicates.
A so-called right-to-work measure supported by Colorado's Coors beer brewing family would ban labor unions from collecting dues from non-union members at a workplace. About 49 percent of respondents to a survey opposed Amendment 47, with 21 percent supporting it, The Denver Post reported Monday.
The state's labor unions had launched plans to place several additional pro-union referendum questions on the ballot to compete with Amendment 47, but dropped those plans after reaching an agreement with state business leaders to oppose the right-to-work measure, the newspaper said.
Jess Knox, head of a coalition of unions fighting Amendment 47, predicted the actual vote will be much closer, telling the Post, "We think we will be fighting for every vote going into Election Day," noting that television advertising had only just begun.
The poll included 625 registered voters questioned between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, and it carried a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
