Posted on: Monday, 6 October 2008, 15:00 CDT

The U.S. Energy Department says it will fund 21 research, development and demonstration projects up to $78 million to promote enhanced geothermal systems.

The announcement was made Monday in Reno, Nev., by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Energy Steven Chalk during a national geothermal conference.

Subject to annual appropriations, Chalk said the department will provide up to $43.1 million over four years to 21 awardees, including a record 13 awards to first-time recipients. With cost-sharing, officials said the public-private investments will be up to $78 million.

A list of the program recipients and the projects is available at http://www.energy.gov/news/6624.htm.
