Somalia: Clan Elders Urge Al-Shabab to Reopen Airport

Excerpt from report by privately-owned Somali Shabeelle Media Network website on 7 October

Over 100 clan elders from the Hawiye have today asked Al-Shabab to reopen Mogadishu airport following a meeting in Mogadishu.

The intellectuals and learned members of the Hawiye clan held a long meeting in Mogadishu and discussed the closure of Mogadishu airport. In a news conference, they specifically urged the Al- Shabab group to rescind its decision to ban the Somali public from using the airport.

The intellectuals said the order to close the airport had not affected the targeted group but had brought suffering to the Somali public. They said the order had brought about deaths, destruction of property and an exodus of civilians. They said they had all agreed that Mogadishu airport as well as those in Kismaayo, Wajid, Garawe, Jowhar and others should not be closed [passage omitted].
