SMU Cox’s Maguire Energy Institute and Leading Industry Experts Discuss “The Promise and Peril of Alternative Energy”
(SMU) – The Maguire Energy Institute at SMU’s Cox School of Business will host its annual Frank Pitts Lecture Series on Tuesday, October 14. This year’s series “The Promise and Peril of Alternative Energy” features experts from FPL Energy, Thompson and Knight Global Energy Services, and GreenHunter Energy. The discussion will focus on the future of renewable energy sources in Texas. North Texans are invited to share their thoughts on the state’s and nation’s energy future.
High oil prices, increasing demand for energy in developing nations and difficulty accessing and developing new oil and gas reserves are encouraging significant investments in alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, biofuels and biomass. Conversations in Washington continue to focus on how these forms of energy provide solutions to many of America’s energy and environmental challenges.
The forum will explore the use and potential of alternative energy from the perspective of companies and people with experience in both the traditional and alternative energy sectors. Through presentations, discussion and dialogue, the forum will provide insight into the future of alternative energy sources from both, economic and environmental perspectives.
During the luncheon the Pitts Scholarship will be awarded to several undergrad and graduate students based on academic performance and their interest in pursuing a career in the energy industry.
George R. Schrader, chairman of Dallas Friday Group and principal of Schrader & Cline, LLC, will moderate the discussion. Featured panelists who will address the power generation, transportation and investment potential of alternative energy sources include:
— T.J. Tuscai, senior vice-president of FPL Energy — Renato Bertani, vice president of Petrobras and current CEO of Thompson and Knight Global Energy Services — Gary C. Evans, chairman and CEO of Green Hunter Energy
“Alternative energy sources are growing rapidly in use and application. While the nation’s energy debate has focused on the broader policy issues surrounding alternative energy, the Frank Pitts lecture will explore the business challenges facing this sector and its market prospects given volatile energy prices and recent economic events,” said Bruce Bullock, director of the Maguire Energy Institute.
