Other Energy Types Probed

As the Manawatu struggles with the cumulative effect of turbines spreading across our hills, balanced against the need for renewable energy, minds begin turning to other types of energy supply, such as off-shore wind farms and tidal turbines.

Environment Minister Trevor Mallard says that these are being investigated all the time.

This include the Government establishing the Marine Energy Deployment Fund, which is offering grants of up to $2 million a year over four years.

"New Zealand's waves and tides are a world- class resource for energy generation, so there's a huge untapped potential for us to harness that energy. We want to help get marine energy generation devices into the water to give us some practical experience of what works in the NZ environment."

Mighty River Power also says it is investigating new technologies, but warns it is early days.
