Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin recently announced at a press conference that the state will partner with Anchorage-based utility Enstar Natural Gas Company to build a pipeline to provide affordable gas to Fairbanks and other areas facing high energy costs. According to an article in the Anchorage Daily News, the pipeline would complement the proposed 2,100-mile, 52-inch diameter Alaska Gas Pipeline planned to transport 4.5 Bcf/d from Alaska’s North Slope primarily to Chicago for distribution throughout the U. S.

Unlike the Alaska Gas Pipeline proposal, the proposed intrastate pipeline would be a shorter, reversible pipeline, capable of carrying gas south from the North Slope or north from Cook Inlet, where major gas finds are likely to be discovered.

Construction of the $3 billion project could begin by 2011, and gas could be flowing by 2013, according to the governor’s timeline.
