Airservices Australia Selects Sensis for Fourth Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control System
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Airservices Australia (Airservices) has contracted with Sensis Corporation to deploy an Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) at Perth Airport. This is the fourth airport in Australia to receive Sensis A-SMGCS. As part of the A-SMGCS deployment, Airservices will also be using Sensis VeeLo NextGen(TM) units for tracking and identification of vehicles on the airport surface and Sensis Aerobahn(R) airport management tool for the efficient management of ground operations.
Sensis A-SMGCS fuses data from multiple surveillance sources, including Sensis Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS) multilateration, Sensis SMRi X-band radar and Sensis VeeLo NextGen vehicle locator units, to deliver accurate and reliable data to the Sensis Multi-Sensor Data Processor (MSDP). The MSDP fuses the surveillance data to provide air traffic controllers in the tower with advanced collision prediction and alerting in the form of visible and audible alerts. The Aerobahn implementation at Perth allows Airservices to further advance its real-time information sharing capabilities to facilitate collaborative decision making applications at each of its four busiest airports.
The key components of the Sensis A-SMGCS at Perth Airport are: -- MDS - Sensis MDS uses multiple low-maintenance, non-rotating sensors to triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals and supply air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position and identification information regardless of weather conditions. Each MDS sensor supports Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) further supporting Airservices' goal of implementing nation wide ADS-B surveillance. -- SMRi - X-band radar that uses 16 channel frequency diversity for improved range and performance in heavy rain. The solid-state, open architecture design of SMRi uses commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and software for lower maintenance and life cycle costs. -- VeeLo NextGen - A Mode S-based vehicle locator that features a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and broadcasts its position and identity using the Mode S Extended Squitter ADS-B message format. This enables the A-SMGCS to accurately and reliably detect, track and identify airport surface vehicles. -- MSDP - The MSDP fuses terminal and surface movement radar, multilateration and ADS-B data into a single track by enabling the strengths of each individual sensor to overcome the limitations of the other sensors for the most accurate indication of target locations. The key operational feature of the Sensis MSDP is its proven conflict prediction and alerting functionality, Safety Logic. Safety Logic provides controllers with visual and audible alerts for more than 40 alert situations. -- Aerobahn - By combining airline flight schedule and corresponding operational information with ground surveillance data from the A-SMGCS, a real-time, highly accurate view of surface operations can be shared with airport stakeholders. This enables Airservices to understand, in real-time, ground and terminal operations at each of Australia's four major airports.
In addition to Perth, Sensis is deploying A-SMGCS at other Australian airports including Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Sensis is also deploying MDS for wide area multilateration in Tasmania and enhanced terminal and precision runway monitoring at Sydney airport.
Today, Sensis' customers are using its A-SMGCS technology at 15 airports around the world. Under contract to the U.S. FAA, Sensis continues to deploy A-SMGCS under the Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) program to 35 airports. Outside of the U.S., Sensis A-SMGCS is operational at Indira Gandhi International Airport and is being deployed at Hong Kong International Airport.
