UK-based renewable energy firm Helius Energy has announced that it has signed an option to lease an 18-acre site located within Avonmouth Dock, on the Bristol Channel, for the proposed construction of a 100MWe biomass power plant.
Helius is expected to submit an application under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 for development of the project and will enter into a statutory consultation process with relevant authorities and conservation bodies.
The option to lease is exercisable within 48 months for the construction and operation of the biomass facility together with an option to lease an area for a construction compound, exercisable at Helius's option.
The exercise of the option to lease the site from First Corporate Shipping is subject to the securing of consent under the act and deemed planning permission. The site reportedly benefits from quayside access and a commercial agreement for port support from The Bristol Port Company.
John Seed, managing director of Helius Energy, said: "We are delighted to have secured this highly desirable site for a proposed 100MWe biomass power plant following the sale of our 65MWe Stallingborough project. Helius Energy remains committed to becoming a leading developer and operator of dedicated biomass power plants."
