Daimler Trucks North America said Tuesday it would close its St. Thomas, Ontario, truck plant in March 2009 to align production with market demand.
Daimler will also close a plant in Portland, Ore., in June 2010. Both closings are scheduled to coincide with the expiration of union contracts, the company said in a statement.
Daimler said it would discontinue its Sterling brand, which is currently produced in Ontario.
The Western Star brand, made in Oregon, will be assigned to the company's plant in Santiago, Mexico. Production of the Freightliner-branded military vehicles "will take place at one of the company's facilities in the Carolinas by mid-year 2010," the company said.
Daimler said it expected the costs of shifting production would be around $600 million, while annual earnings are expected to improve by $900 million by 2011.
Including the 720 workers in Ontario the company plans to furlough in November, Daimler said 2,300 workers would be affected by the plant closings.
