In the tobacco segment, Philip Morris International acquired Canada based Rothmans Inc. in a bid to expand the companys product offerings with Rothmans growing portfolio of discount brands. The food segment witnessed increased M&A activity in the emerging markets, accounting for 35.7% of the total deals recorded in the segment.

Earnings in consumer markets are relatively less affected than other sectors during a period of economic slowdown. Uncertain economic growth and continued high inflation rates may impact the fund raising activity of the companies through public markets in the short term. Valuations in the consumer sector are like to remain steady in medium term.
