Norsk Hydro, Shell Deploy GE Condition Monitoring Technology at Ormen Lange

October 16, 2008

Norsk Hydro and Norske Shell have deployed GE’s Bently Nevada condition monitoring technology for the Ormen Lange gas field in Norway.

With this installation, Norske Shell will be able to monitor the operating condition of a significant amount of plant equipment that was previously inaccessible (in remote locations or difficult environments), as well as assets that could not previously be frequently monitored due to cost or logistical issues.

In addition to the wireless condition monitoring solution, GE Energy also supplied a Bently Nevada 3500 condition monitoring system to monitor critical rotating assets, including the installed 50MW gas compressors and pumps.

Brian Palmer, vice president of GE Energy’s optimization and control, said: “Our condition monitoring systems are assisting Norske Shell in meeting key operating requirements in terms of effectiveness, reliability and safety for this gas plant at Ormen Lange. The Ormen Lange gas field project is very important for natural gas customers in the UK and we are glad that our technology is a part of it.”
