Soldier Puts Loaded Gun in Checked Bag

Posted on: Monday, 20 October 2008, 09:00 CDT

A U.S. soldier on bereavement leave from Iraq has been charged for packing a loaded gun in baggage she checked for a flight to Texas.

U.S. Army Spc. Vonda Collier, 38, of San Antonio, was arrested at Long Island's MacArthur Airport after federal baggage screeners spotted a 4-inch revolver in her suitcase, Newsday reported Monday.

A police spokesman said Collier failed to follow TSA regulations requiring that guns be unloaded, locked in a secure container and declared to baggage handlers.

Collier was arrested early Sunday before boarding a Southwest Airlines flight to San Antonio. She was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for not having a license and was jailed pending arraignment, Newsday said.
