Tis the Season for Fake Luxury Watches

October 21, 2008

“A sucker is born every minute,” said P.T. Barnum, but that doesn’t mean it has to be you. High-end replica watches will be duping cost conscious Holiday shoppers but not if Avi Dayan, owner of San Francisco based A & E Imports, has anything to say about it. He has great consumer tips to prevent buying fake luxury watches.

How does Avi know so much about watches? He responds, “I have been purchasing watches globally and locally for over 30 years. Buying watches makes up 50% of our business, so I have experience on what to look for.” www.aandewatches.com

So, what are Avi’s important things to know before you buy a watch?

— If a watch is waterproof, make sure. Submerge it for a few minutes in water and see if the face floods.

— Fine men’s watches have smooth second hand movements.

— Time the watch for one minute. Then shake it hard for 30 seconds and time it again. Fake mechanisms can easily be dislodged.

— Do not buy a watch on Craigslist or eBay. There are no guarantees that you are purchasing the real thing. Also, these sellers do not provide a warranty.

— Never meet a private seller with cash. This is a safety issue.

— Only purchase from websites that accept credit cards or PayPal. Do not buy from a seller that only accepts wire transfers or cash.

— Purchase from websites that have a brick and mortar location.

— Many new European watch names on the market claim they are luxury watches. They typically are not. Research before you buy.

— Buy from a place with a fully equipped service center, which backs warranties.

— “Remember if the price seems to good to be true… it probably is.”

A&E Imports sells and purchases luxury watch brands such as Rolex, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Chopard and Omega at competitive discounted prices. All watches have an exclusive three-year warranty. Avi’s company also has one of the most extensive collections of vintage watches and its repair center has a famous inventory of antique parts, dials, bands, and more.

“Be careful this season,” Avi states. “Do not become the one that paid a luxury price for a replica watch.”
