German utility major E.ON and the French government-funded technological research organization Commissariat a L'Energie Atomique have agreed to co-operate in the field of nuclear energy research.
The co-operation between E.ON and the Commissariat a L'Energie Atomique (CEA) will mainly focus on material research, innovation in reactor technology and safety, as well as the development of future power generation.
The research results are expected to contribute to both safe operation of existing plants and the planning and implementation of new power station projects.
Wulf Bernotat, CEO of E.ON, said: "Nuclear power as a CO2-free energy resource is of particular importance in climate protection. In Germany alone, power stations avoid 150 million tonnes of CO2 and are one of the most efficient ways to reduce CO2 output. Particularly in times of high energy prices, therefore, nuclear power may have a cost-reducing effect.
"Numerous European countries have decided in favor of expanding power generation based on nuclear power. Against this background we want to play an active role in safety research and in further developing this technology of the future."
