Governor Rendell Announces $26 Million to Train Workers, Strengthen Businesses
HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Governor Edward G. Rendell today said workers in high-growth, high-demand industries will be able to improve their skills and improve their careers through the state investment of $12 million in industry partnerships which leverages $14 million in private-sector funds.
“For Pennsylvania to lead in the global marketplace, our workers must be more highly skilled and better trained than any of the competition,” Governor Rendell said. “Industry partnerships are helping employers in our state’s most important industries prepare themselves and their employees for the future.”
There are more than 6,100 companies currently working together in 90 active partnerships. Over the last four years, more than 61,000 employees have received advanced skills training through the program.
“Today’s workplace is knowledge-based and globally connected,” Governor Rendell said. “By investing in training, developing career ladders and connecting employees with opportunities to succeed, industry partnerships are helping position Pennsylvania as a leading player in today’s economy.”
The state’s strategic investments announced today provide nearly $9 million for workforce training in key industries and $3 million to develop industry partnerships in which employers, workers and workers’ representatives from vital industries cooperate to improve their collective competitive position in the marketplace.
These targeted investments, made possible through funding by the General Assembly and administered by local workforce investment boards, help industry partnership participants identify specific training needs and skill gaps, help connect young people to careers, help educational and training institutions arrange curriculum to meet business demands, address worker recruitment and retention, develop career ladders within companies, highlight best practices, and promote communication among companies.
