Enel Begins Construction of Mochovce Nuclear Units in Slovakia

Posted on: Tuesday, 4 November 2008, 12:00 CST

Italian electricity utility Enel has begun site works for the Mochovce nuclear power plant units 3 and 4 in Slovakia. The commencement of construction follows a decision of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Slovakia approving the design changes pertaining to the completion of the two nuclear units.

The two new reactor units are expected to be phased into the power grid in 2012 and 2013, respectively. When the two units come on line, 880MW of new power generating capacity is expected to cater to as much as 22% of Slovakia's electricity consumption.

The investment in the two units is expected to total E2.77 billion and will be financed by Slovenske elektrarne, a Slovak electricity utility, in which Enel Produzione holds a 66% stake. The investor will start the environmental impact assessment procedure, required for the commissioning and operating license, by the end of 2008.

Slovenske elektrarne has adapted the civil and technological part of the design of units 3 and 4 to bring them in line with international practice and requirements of the supervisory authorities.

Modification of the design is based on the experience from the construction, commissioning and operation of units of the same type in Slovakia and abroad, and it is expected to guarantee that the two new units will comply with or exceed the current international safety requirements for nuclear installations.
