IPL Invests in Emission Reduction Controls at Sutherland Generating Station
The Interstate Power and Light Company, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy, has announced that it is continuing with the installation of $30 million worth emissions reduction technologies at the 143MW Sutherland generating station in Marshalltown, Iowa.
The power plant produces enough energy to power approximately 143,000 homes. Construction began in August 2008, to install an over fire air (OFA), selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) and rich reagent injection (RRI) systems.
The Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) expects the technologies to remove more than 60% of the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the Sutherland generating station Unit-3.
The OFA, SNCR and RRI projects are expected to require a peak workforce of approximately 300 workers with a total number of labor hours at approximately 200,000. IPL expects the NOx emissions reduction projects to be completed by the end of 2008.
Thomas Aller, president of IPL, said: “We are proud to play a part in positioning our service area for a bright energy future. Our investments in emissions reduction technologies, combined with our pursuit of additional baseload and renewable energy generation and commitment to energy conservation provide a balanced approach for our state’s economy and environment.”
