Nova Scotia Power Receives Approval to Increase Electricity Rates

Nova Scotia Power has announced that the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has approved a settlement agreement regarding 2009 electricity rates which was reached by the company in September 2008. The overall average increase across all classes will be 9.3%.
The decision means most Nova Scotia Power customers, including residential and commercial customers, will experience a rate increase of 9.4% on January 1, 2009.
Rob Bennett, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Power, said: "We appreciate that any increase in the price of electricity will be challenging for many customers. As our regulator points out in the decision, the world price of coal, which is the main fuel we use to make electricity, remains high and is twice as much as it was when rates were last set."
