Consumers Energy Customers Urged to Keep Gas and Electric Meters Free of Snow, Ice

LANSING, Mich., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- With wintry temperatures, cold and snow blanketing parts of Michigan, Consumers Energy is once again reminding its electric and gas customers to keep safety in mind by following some simple steps to keep their meters clear.

One of the best ways customers can help ensure the safety of meter readers as well as the proper operation of natural gas and electric meters is by keeping the meters free of snow and ice buildup. Snow and ice can often hide potentially hazardous situations. A clear path to the meter and no obstacles around the meter location helps meter readers do their job efficiently and safely.

Whenever possible, sidewalks, stairways and gate areas should also be kept free of ice and snow. For indoor meters, the path leading to the meter should be kept clutter-free and well lighted to help spot potential hazards.

"If customers take these steps, it will make their gas and electric meters easier to read and will also reduce the need for estimating your energy use," said Rufus Gladney, executive manager of energy services, west for the utility.

As an additional safety precaution, customers are encouraged to secure dogs away from all meters.
