ST. LOUIS, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — An international panel of
judges has presented Peabody Energy with dual honors at the 10th Global Energy
Awards in New York City: The Award of Excellence honors Peabody’s industry
leadership, and the Strategic Energy Investment of the Year recognizes
Peabody’s global transformation to capitalize on high-growth, high-margin
markets.

The Award of Excellence honors Peabody’s leadership in being the only
energy company in the world recognized as a finalist in each of the 10 years
of the competition. Peabody has been awarded Coal Company of the Year three
times since the Global Energy Awards were established and has been a finalist
in multiple categories 29 times. In 2008, Peabody was honored as a finalist
for CEO of the Year, Industry Leadership, Hydrocarbon Producer of the Year and
Strategic Energy Investment of the Year.

The first-ever Strategic Energy Investment Award recognizes Peabody’s
success in expanding beyond its U.S. platform, growing its international
earnings contribution from just 1 percent to half the total. Executing the
vision included rapid growth in Australia to serve Asia-Pacific markets
through a major acquisition; expanding international coal trading activities;
and developing new business in high-growth markets including China.

“The Global Energy Awards are the Oscars of Energy and one more barometer
of our success as a leading international energy company,” said Gregory H.
Boyce
, Peabody Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “I thank
Peabody’s 7,000 employees around the world for our success in expanding
globally, setting new financial records and serving as a global leader in
clean coal solutions.”

The Platts Global Energy Awards recognize innovation, leadership and
superior performance in more than a dozen categories. Honorees are selected
from nearly 200 entrants by a global panel of energy leaders, including former
regulators, heads of major energy companies, leading academics and
international energy experts.

The Award of Excellence and Strategic Energy Investment of the Year
accentuate more than 40 safety, environmental and corporate honors Peabody
earned in the past year. Peabody also is ranked first in the mining and crude
oil sector in Fortune’s listing of Most Admired Companies and has the number
one position in all categories.

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) is the world’s largest private-sector coal
company. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S.
electricity generation and 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
