Holiday Gift Package From Kendall-Jackson Winery Features Adoption of Barn Owl Nesting Boxes

Posted on: Friday, 5 December 2008, 07:00 CST

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Family-owned Kendall-Jackson Winery today announced a limited "green" holiday gift that offers an opportunity to adopt a wooden barn owl nesting box located on Kendall-Jackson's Hawkeye Mountain. The gift package includes wines made from grapes grown in the same vineyards the barn owls guard.

Kendall-Jackson partnered with Marin-based non-profit Hungry Owl Project (hungryowl.org) to craft 100 boxes made from recycled and donated materials. Hungry Owl nesting boxes were made as a community project by school students, Hungry Owl Project volunteers, Eagle Scouts and retired individuals.

"The barn owl nesting boxes are a natural solution to pest management in the vineyard. This project reflects our commitment to follow sustainable practices in vineyard management and winemaking," said Robert Boller, vice president of Sustainability for Kendall-Jackson.

"The Hungry Owl Project is proud to support Kendall-Jackson in its sustainable approach to grape growing. By installing barn owl nesting boxes in the estate vineyards, we hope to attract more barn owls. These amazing little hunters can consume thousands of rodents a year," said Hungry Owl Project Program Director Alex Godbe.

The Kendall-Jackson Owl Box Gift features a year-long adoption of one of the barn owl nesting boxes. Owl activity will be monitored in the boxes over the following year and each box sponsor will be provided with a report at the end of that period detailing information such as the number of baby owls born in the box and other interesting owl activity at the site. The gift package also includes one bottle of Kendall-Jackson Highland Estates Hawkeye Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon produced entirely with grapes grown on Hawkeye Mountain, as well as one bottle each of Kendall-Jackson's Vintner's Reserve and Grand Reserve cabernet sauvignons, of which a portion of the grapes are sourced from this unique vineyard site. A signed, limited edition watercolor print of the Hungry Owl Project wildlife ambassador, painted by Hungry Owl Project volunteer Mary Blake completes this extraordinary package.

The gift package is $500 and only 100 are available. They can be purchased at kj.com/holiday or at the Kendall-Jackson Wine Center.

The Hungry Owl Project is a program of Wildlife and is dedicated to education and wildlife conservation and to finding natural alternatives to toxic pesticides. They seek solutions that will sustain a safe, healthy environment for wildlife and humans alike. Kendall-Jackson will be supporting the Hungry Owl Project with donations throughout this holiday season.
