WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a Statement of Building and Construction Trades Department President Mark H. Ayers:

America's Building Trades Unions are pleased that President-Elect Barack Obama has chosen Steven Chu to serve as the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Energy will be a critical aspect of the president-elect's commitment to create 2.5 million jobs by 2011...and to create several million more jobs in the long-term as our nation seizes the economic opportunities contained within the solutions to our burgeoning climate crisis.

In selecting Steven Chu, President-elect Obama has sent a clear message to America that we will have an extremely intelligent Energy Secretary who possesses unrivaled technical competence and international stature; who understands our nation's need for a diversified energy portfolio; and who has consistently expressed a deep commitment to pursuing the breakthrough energy technologies that will be the American jobs engine of the future.
