The milestone? DHL Global Mail now performs the most advanced sorting by destination--using all 5 digits of the ZIP Code--on 83 percent of customer parcels nationwide. That percentage is unmatched in the mailing industry! To underscore the significance of this achievement, consider that very few mail providers even meet the volume requirements to perform 5-digit ZIP Code sorting--a process which accelerates the delivery of packages, helps ensure their arrival in peak condition and secures postage discounts.
"At DHL Global Mail, we add value for businesses by offering competitive transit times and high-quality service at volume-discount rates," said
As an expeditor, DHL Global Mail picks up and sorts customers' mail and parcels, then injects them into the USPS mail stream as close as possible to the ultimate destination. This occurs under the company's longstanding Workshare partnership with the USPS, which handles final delivery. When an expeditor sorts customer parcels all the way down to the 5-digit ZIP Code level, they get delivered faster for two reasons. First, DHL Global Mail can skip over more USPS facilities, inserting parcels deeper into the mail stream. Second, the USPS places a higher priority on delivering pieces sorted to this advanced level. These packages also tend to arrive in the best condition, since bypassing processing facilities reduces the amount they are handled.
DHL Global Mail increased the use of 5-digit ZIP Code sorting for packages, which has also reduced shipment delays, under a major initiative to enhance their parcel service. After seeing a large jump in the volume of packages that customers were shipping, the company reengineered their parcel process this year using exacting Six Sigma methodology. In addition to changing their sorting schemes to reach the 5-digit ZIP Code level with even more packages, DHL Global Mail reorganized the footprints of their processing facilities to streamline operations and optimize performance.
