China begins construction on viaduct
China began construction Sunday on the world’s longest cable-stayed viaduct, spanning the Qiantang River, officials said.
Scheduled for completion by 2012, the viaduct is expected to set a world record for length at 1.67 miles. The record is held currently by the French Millau bridge, at just over 1.5 miles.
The Jiaxing-Shaoxing bridge will have six piers supporting an 8-lane roadway.
It will become a section on the national highway linking Shenyang with Haikou, capital of southernmost China’s Hainan Province.
