Greening Your New Year’s Resolutions Aquarium of the Bay’s Recommendations for 2009

December 16, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ — Aquarium of the Bay, the only major
attraction in San Francisco to be certified by the city as a Green Business,
takes a strong commitment to its environmentally-friendly actions, and
challenges you to do the same. Instead of recycling “eat healthier and
exercise more,” Carrie Chen, Aquarium of the Bay’s Education and Conservation
Director, recommends the following Bay-focused New Year’s resolutions.

— I will keep my Bay clean: When you wash your car at home, soapy water,
motor oil and other heavy metals enter storm drains, bypassing wastewater
treatment plants, flowing directly into the Bay and affecting marine life.
Vow to use non-toxic cleaners or take your car to a self-serve or professional
car wash, where the water will flow to wastewater treatment plants.

— I will help make my Bay sustainable: If a restaurant served tiger,
you’d ask some questions, right? For the sake of all marine environments, the
same should hold true when purchasing seafood. Pick up a Seafood Watch card
at the Aquarium or visit our online Conservation section to learn more:

— I will volunteer for my Bay: In addition to California Coastal Clean
Up Day, which Aquarium of the Bay supports, there are numerous ways to lend
your hands. Adopt a “don’t pass it up, pick it up” mantra or check out
volunteer opportunities with our conservation partners, at:

— I will explore my Bay: Who says that New Year’s resolutions can’t be
fun? The San Francisco Bay is absolutely brimming with opportunities for
exploration. Whether you visit the Aquarium and learn more about its diverse
marine life; discover one of countless state, county or city parks or beaches
or just stroll the shoreline, commit to connecting with nature in 2009.
Here’s to a safer and healthier San Francisco Bay in 2009.
