STA to Deploy 71 Alternative Fuel School Buses to Serve Students in San Fernando Valley

SANTA BARBARA, CA, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Student Transportation of America, Ltd. (STA) today announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide transportation services to the Los Angeles Unified School District beginning in the 2009 - 2010 school year. The initial five-year contract is valued at just under $5 million per school year and covers student transportation in the San Fernando Valley area.

Under terms of the contract, STA will purchase 71 new propane-fueled school vehicles. The benefits of propane fueled vehicles include increased mileage and fuel efficiency.

An industry leader in "green" fuel initiatives, STA, in 2007, received South Coast AQMD grants toward the purchase of Compressed Natural Gas buses for its Riverside, Ca. operations. The company also operates the largest fleet of biodiesel-fueled buses in Ontario, Canada, where it operates as Student Transportation of Canada. Alternative fuels drive down greenhouse gases and emissions.

The Los Angeles Unified School District currently owns and operates approximately 1000 school vehicles.

"We are extremely pleased that STA was sought out and recommended for this service by the Los Angeles Unified School District's Transportation Department," said Raymond Delegarde, vice president of STA's West Coast operations. "We serve a number of school districts around the state of California and believe that our reputation for providing cost-effective, high quality service played an important part in the Los Angeles decision.

"We have been asked to review the transportation needs for a number of school districts this year where capital is needed to sustain and modernize their fleets. STA has the resources and experience to design and operate cost effective school transportation so school districts can concentrate on the important issue of education," he said.

With this new contract, STA continues to build regional density on the West Coast while pursuing growth opportunities through acquisitions, bids and school district conversions throughout the United States and Canada.
