Statement by Joe Lucas, Senior Vice President for Communications of ACCCE, Regarding the Completion of the Clean Coal Power Initiative
Posted on: Friday, 19 December 2008, 16:11 CST
"The Clean Coal Power Initiative represents the most recent partnership between the federal government and private industry to work together and share the cost of bringing new technologies to the marketplace. Anyone who doubts the success of this ongoing effort - as measured in terms of cleaner air, increased energy independence, and lower energy costs for the American consumer - is not grading very fairly.
"With respect to carbon capture and storage, this program - which was launched in 2003 - shows that the coal-based electricity sector is moving forward on technology strategies to reduce CO(2). The results of the CCPI show measured results in increasing power plant efficiencies that will lead to CO(2) avoidance.
"Perhaps the best news for consumer is that the results of the CCPI show that these technologies can be done on a cost-effective basis. In many cases, the technologies demonstrated in the CCPI were able to pay for themselves in the first year of operation.
"Let me be clear, the DOE's report continues to show the great progress that is being made. However, more can and will be done. ACCCE supports increased funding for advanced clean coal technology programs because we know that these programs provide measurable results in terms of meeting more stringent environmental standards, promoting energy independence, creating jobs, and ensuring access to affordable, reliable energy for American businesses and working families."
About ACCCE
The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is a non-profit, non-partisan partnership of companies involved in producing electricity from coal. Because coal is America's most abundant energy resource, ACCCE supports energy policies that balance coal's vital role in meeting our country's growing need for affordable and reliable electricity with the need to protect the environment. ACCCE also advocates for the development and deployment of advanced clean coal technologies that will produce electricity with near-zero emissions. Headquartered in
