‘Kid Detectives’ Will Be On the Case at the 2009 PA Farm Show

HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Children visiting the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show can become “Farm Show Detectives” and investigate where milk comes from, find out why bees are important to growing food, and discover what dogs can do, said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff.

“As ‘Farm Show Detectives,’ youth visiting the Farm Show can learn about Pennsylvania’s number one industry, agriculture, in a fun, engaging way,” said Wolff. “It’s vitally important to the future of our industry that we share the message of agriculture with youth so they grow up with an appreciation of where their food comes from.”

The “detectives” will use a special map to guide them to 18 interactive learning stations located throughout the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Learning station headquarters are at the Department of Agriculture booth in the Main Hall where participants can register and enter to win prizes sponsored by Turkey Hill.

The grand prize is a one year of free ice cream. One winner will be chosen each day for the “daily detective prize,” a Turkey Hill Party Pack. Five winners will be chosen each day to receive Turkey Hill cows and replica trucks, and 20,000 other giveaways during the week from Turkey Hill.

The stations will be marked with a lamppost and signage and will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the show. The stations include: alpacas; horses; beef and veal; goats, deer and bison; dairy; the butter sculpture; the family living center; apples; bees; food labels; dogs; vegetables; the Woodmobile; poultry; rabbits; swine; edible nuts; and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 270 commercial exhibitors. The eight-day show is Jan. 10-17, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg. Admission is free and parking is $8.
