PITTSBURGH, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ — “We are delighted by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s approval of our sale to Veolia Transportation,” said James Campolongo, president and chief executive officer of the Pittsburgh Transportation Group (PTG).

Formerly Pittsburgh’s largest privately-held passenger transportation company, PTG becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Veolia Transportation, North America’s largest private transportation provider. “Veolia has given us considerable autonomy,” he noted, “and provides an opportunity for further growth and expansion.”

“We will be able to move more quickly expanding our vehicle fleet, adding services, and in installing additional technology throughout our system,” said Campolongo. “Our employees have been informed about the sale and understand there will be no loss of jobs or benefits. We anticipate new hiring and additional promotional opportunities.”

With the sale of the company, Campolongo will continue to operate PTG and assist Veolia in its expansion and growth plans. He agreed to a five-year contract to stay with Veolia.

The Pittsburgh Transportation Group include Yellow Cab, Checker Cab, Peoples Cab, Express Shuttle, Embassy Coach/Limousine Service, Star Paratransit, PTG Charter Services, and Freedom Coach. PTG had revenue in excess of $24 million in 2007, operates over 600 vehicles with 450 independent contractors and over 300 employees.

Established in 2001, Veolia Transportation is a division of Veolia Transport Worldwide, itself a division of Veolia Environment based in Paris. Veolia Transport Worldwide operates services on behalf of 5,000 local, regional and national authorities around the world and had revenues of $5 billion.

Veolia Transportation is the leading provider of passenger and ground transportation services in North America, operating bus, rail, shuttle and paratransit systems in over 150 locations in the United States and Canada.

The North America division has rail contracts in Boston and Los Angeles; fixed route and commuter bus contracts in New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., North and South Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, California, and Canada; runs paratransit systems in Connecticut, Maryland, Washington, D.C., South Carolina, Texas, and California; and operates bus-rapid-transit systems in Las Vegas and Ontario, Canada.

Veolia Transport first began operating buses in France over 150 years ago. Since then, the company has grown to operate a network of road, rail and maritime passenger services in 27 countries and employing over 70,000 people.
