Posted on: Tuesday, 6 January 2009, 15:22 CST

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to President Bush's creation of three new marine national monuments, National Aquarium in Washington, DC Executive Director Bob Ramin issued the following statement:

"President Bush's expansion of ocean monuments to three new Pacific areas is a vital move to increase public awareness of our marine heritage and foster scientific research, monitoring, and exploration. "As caretaker of 'America's Aquatic Treasures(TM),' the National Aquarium in Washington, DC highlights the many animals and habitats of the freshwater ecosystems and other conservation hot spots through important conservation efforts like the National Marine Sanctuaries Program. "We applaud President Bush's recognition and commitment to expand the preservation of these cherished marine monuments."

In 1972, exactly one hundred years after the first national park was created, the nation made a similar commitment to preserving its marine treasures by establishing the National Marine Sanctuary Program. The Program is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that works cooperatively with the public to balance enjoyment and use with long-term conservation.

As the nation's oldest aquarium, the National Aquarium in Washington DC is a private, non-profit organization that relies on private and public support and admission revenue to operate. The National Aquarium features America's Aquatic TreasuresTM, a showcase of more than 250 species of unique and engaging animals. Located 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20230.

General Admission $7; seniors and military, $6; ages 2-10, $3; younger than 2, free. Visit nationalaquarium.org or call 202-482-2825
