Chicago Tribune to launch tabloid edition

January 13, 2009

The Chicago Tribune said it would introduce a new tabloid-sized edition of the paper for newsstand sales, keeping a broadsheet edition for home delivery.

The two editions will carry the same content, but may carry different headlines, photos or captions to accommodate the size differences, the Tribune reported Tuesday.

The price of the tabloid — aside from a free version on Monday, the day it debuts — will remain the same as the broadsheet sales edition, which is 75 cents.

Many news consumers have asked for a more convenient version of the paper that contains all of the same great news and information, Chicago Tribune Media Group President, Publisher and Chief Executive Officer Tony Hunter said. Starting Monday, we’ll give them what they’ve asked for.

Companies succeed when they leverage strong brands and respond to customer feedback, Hunter said.
