Governor Rendell: Four Teams Qualify to Offer Southport Development Proposals

Posted on: Friday, 23 January 2009, 12:09 CST

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Four teams have qualified to offer proposals for the design, construction and operation of the new Southport marine terminal in Philadelphia, Governor Edward G. Rendell said today.

"The Southport project is an important public-private partnership that will create a state-of-the-art maritime facility at minimal cost to taxpayers," Governor Rendell said. "The facility will create jobs in the Philadelphia region, boost the local tax base, generate new revenues for the state, and provide other economic benefits."

Four teams that provided detailed responses to a Request for Qualifications issued last August have been deemed qualified to offer proposals. Initial technical proposals will be due in three months, with final technical and financial proposals due in the third quarter of 2009. Selection of a winning proposal is expected by the end of 2009.

The successful team will receive a 30-50 year concession to develop and operate the Southport facility in exchange for the right to collect revenues from shipping lines and other users.

"I fully support the expansion of Southport as a critical investment in our infrastructure," said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. "This project will continue to position Philadelphia as a premiere port while providing good paying jobs and valuable economic opportunities for the region. I look forward to a healthy partnership between the city, the state, and those who will oversee the construction and operation of this new facility."

The Rendell administration is committed to creating a first-rate public education system, protecting our most vulnerable citizens and continuing economic investment to support our communities and businesses.
