Pontiac Development Offers Innovative Solution to Homelessness, Smart Alternative to Cuts in Corporate Philanthropy

Posted on: Monday, 2 February 2009, 12:06 CST

Feb. 5 - 2:00 P.M. Ribbon-Cutting at Rhonda Hart House to Celebrate Partnership of Pulte Homes, Grace Centers of Hope and HomeAid Michigan

PONTIAC, Mich., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At a time when economic uncertainty has reduced corporate philanthropy and increased job layoffs, home foreclosures and the numbers of homeless families, a Pontiac development suggests a novel way to address homelessness and cuts in corporate giving.

The Rhonda Hart House will officially open its doors to two homeless families that consist of single mothers with their children on February 5, 2009. The two mothers (graduates of a One Year Life Skills Program) and their children will each rent and occupy their own unit in the duplex home. This effort is the product of an innovative partnership between a local non-profit organization and corporations that donated more in time and supplies than in cash to join the fight in ending the incidence of homelessness among women and children. The vast majority of homeless individuals and children are homeless due to various life circumstances.

HomeAid Michigan, the state affiliate of a national organization that fights homelessness, brought together Grace Centers of Hope, Pulte Homes, and more than 20 local and national building industry partners, including Masco Corp., to build the Rhonda Hart House near downtown Pontiac. HomeAid Michigan will host a ceremonial ribbon-cutting there -- 49 Seneca Street (located behind Grace Gospel Fellowship, off of Perry Street) -- at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5. The event is free to the public and a host of state and local officials, supporters of community redevelopment and advocates for the homeless are expected to attend. Some confirmed attendees include: Kimberly Trent, Director of Governor Granholm's Southeast Michigan Office; Dennis Toffolo, Deputy Oakland County Executive and Clarence E. Phillips, Mayor of Pontiac.

Parking and shuttle service at Grace Gospel Fellowship available at 210 North Perry Street in Pontiac (located at the corner of the Woodward Loop and Perry Street).
