Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Expands to Sarasota

Posted on: Friday, 6 February 2009, 12:30 CST

SARASOTA, Fla., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Last Monday, over a hundred building professionals packed into Sarasota's Gelbhart Auditorium at the Selby Library in downtown to join the third branch of the not-for-profit organization geared toward renewable energy and eco-friendly building options for a better future.

According to Colleen Mackin, Executive Director of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, "Green is so popular a topic now that Sarasota will have no problem building a strong branch of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Council. The group's mission is to transform the Built Environment."

The Ft. Myers branch already has 120 members and they just opened for membership last fall, according to Branch Chairman Lynn Murtagh. Now, the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter (501(c) 3) will have 3 branches. Longtime members like Joe Souza of Tampa, who is chair of the LEED for Homes committee, will not find himself driving from Tampa to Naples on a Thursday night after work like he had been doing for years.

President of the Chapter, Josh Bomstein, LEED AP, of Creative Contractors commented that, "Sarasota is seen as the Berkeley of Florida, as far as green goes." It was explained that the national organization is company-driven, the chapters are based on individual memberships and dues are $65 annually and are only $50, if your company is a member of the USGBC. Those interested can join and find out more at www.sustainabletampabay.org or call Colleen Mackin at (727)372-3814.

Michael Carlson's leadership should prove to be a positive step for this branch. His preparation, engaging delivery and enthusiasm should guide this group well in bringing together the personalities and organizations in the area that will greatly reduce the environmental impact of the region south of St. Pete and north of Fort Myers. Michael is looking for committed volunteers to fill the four branch council positions and the seven committee chairs/co-chairs. He would like those interested in positions to email Michael@CarlsonStudio.org by this weekend. He has big plans for this branch that will have a Dynamic Governance Process linking the levels of the whole organization together. Judging by the standing room only turnout, it seems like he will have a lot of help.
