NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ — The Journal of Commerce Conferences’ inaugural Cool Cargoes Conference (http://www.joc.com/conferences/CoolCargoes/) will take place May 12 and 13, 2009, at The Nines Hotel in Portland, Oregon. The theme of the event is “Linking Up the Cold Chain,” and Pacific Northwest Port of Portland, a fast-growing port for refrigerated and frozen cargo, will be the conference host.

Cool Cargoes will be of particular interest to shippers, carriers, 3PLs, government officials, attorneys and key supply-chain providers involved in the transportation and storage of perishable items such as foods, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.

Speakers and panelists — leading industry experts and newsmakers — will discuss the trends and significant developments in the refrigerated and frozen cargo supply chain; the expanded role of public refrigerated warehouses; challenges facing pack houses, carriers, handling facilities and end-clearing agents; the latest technology advancements; and how ports, shippers, carriers and intermediaries are improving efficiencies in transportation as well as distribution and logistics systems.

Specific session topics include:

  • Cool cargo opportunities in emerging markets
  • Trade barriers in the cold chain
  • When smaller ports make sense (and when they don’t)
  • The future of reefer cargo on rail
  • Best practices for food handling
  • The shrinking world of reefer trucking
  • Breakbulk vs. reefer – which way does the tide flow?
