Boricua Village Construction Workers Reflect Diversity of the Bronx, and Future Population

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Walking past Atlantic Development Group's Boricua Village construction site on any given day, the sound of workers speaking English and Spanish can be heard alongside Russian, Urdu, Portuguese and other languages. Those different tongues not only reflect the diversity of more than 200 highly skilled workers building the housing, retail and educational components of the project, but also reflect the future tenants of its buildings and the population of the Bronx as a whole.

Boricua Village, a 4.5-acre mixed-use development, sits in close proximity to some of the Bronx's most well-known thoroughfares, such as the Grand Concourse, Boston Road, Park Avenue, and E. 161 Street, known by most New Yorkers as the address of Yankee Stadium, both the new one and the old one. Melrose, Crotona, Morrisania, Concourse Village - those are the communities that border and intersect what will be the Bronx's newest and largest mixed-use project in more than a quarter of a century.

"It's amazing to see just how many different people there are working on this site," says Garfield Stewart, one of the three managers on the project. Each day approximately 200 workers converge on the construction site to build Boricua Village. Stewart and co-Project Manager Stephanie Gante agree that the diversity of the workforce represents the Bronx's own celebrated diversity.

"What we have done is to hire some of the best tradesmen and craftsmen in construction and put them to work creating high-quality residences that people can feel comfortable raising their families in," said Jack Cohen, CEO of Construction at Atlantic Development Group.

The Boricua Village project is one of the largest and most ambitious residential development projects in the Bronx in decades. The development will offer New Yorkers an opportunity to live in a unique setting featuring a four year college, thousands of square feet of stores and studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments in a beautifully landscaped location. Residents will feel part of a small town with all of the benefits of one of New York City's most dynamic and accessible neighborhoods.

"New York City is in desperate need of more quality affordable housing and the Bronx is a place where that need is probably strongest," said Peter Fine, Principal of Atlantic Development Group. "We have developed a plan that combines beautiful, modern housing that people can afford with the added benefit of a village setting. When all is said and done, I think that Boricua Village will be a shot in the arm for residential development in the Bronx," he added.
