The Society of Forensic Toxicologists Comments on the National Academy of Sciences' Report on 'Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States'

SOFT sponsors programs that address many of these areas. For example, research in forensic toxicology is stimulated through competitive educational research awards offered annually to graduate students, postgraduate students and bench level scientists. Continuing education and training in forensic toxicology is provided through workshops and scientific presentations, as well as regional educational opportunities and links to web-based seminars. In addition, a quarterly newsletter provides technical and professional information to the membership.
In an effort to establish best practices among laboratories, SOFT, in conjunction with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), established Forensic Toxicology Laboratory Guidelines in 1991. Since 1996, these guidelines have served as the foundation for the laboratory accreditation program of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT). In addition, SOFT promotes the establishment and acceptance of uniform qualifications and requirements for the certification of forensic toxicologists at all levels of education and experience.
SOFT is committed to the continued advancement of the field of forensic toxicology and looks forward to working with government and other agencies to enhance these programs.
